HOLY CRAP, I ToliveAnimations, I need to know you

haha. That's honestly one of my favorite songs ever. The second I saw your comment, my view of this song change irreversibly.

Forget the rest, the beginning is just so beautiful I can't stop listening to it. Please PLEASE make a full chillout track using just the beginning. Actually, I really want to remix this. Really badly. It's so ridiculously calm. That pad just drives me crazy, I want to reconstruct it. It sounds like a polyphonic saw pad with eq and an LFO on pitch set at maybe every 1/2 beat.

And don't tell me that that piano is FL keys. :(((

TeHLoY responds:

Wow. Never expected such a response...
The beginning pads was a very slightly phasered saw pad playing the low end, layered with a saw lead for the highs.
And the piano isn't fl keys. It sounds too cheesy. It was two piano soundfonts, played together.

I think I want to mix the rest of the song again. I didn't give my ears a rest before mixing, and now, it sounds a bit badly mixed. Perhaps lower the kick drum, decrease the release for the side chain kick? Do pm me for a response...

Sorry for the delayed review. I've been working.

I really like the ideas found here. I would really try to build some different chord progressions to add some variety and pique more interest. While it was interesting in the beginning where it bellowed up, it got a little tiresome after some time. The trumpet melodies were very nice though. I would try to build some more harmonies using violins. You did use an oboe (or at least what I perceive to be an oboe), but I think the parts could be made even more exciting.

Some tempo variations could help give the idea of a story progression as well. I really wanted it to speed up, but it didn't happen.

Now for the good: the melodies were quite interesting. I liked the stark contrast between the royal sounding trumpet, majestic in nature, with the dark, almost overpowering strings. Nice job on creating the mood. Since this is a stand alone, some sound effects could also come in nicely.

Now don't take my word for everything, since I'm not expert myself. That's just my two cents.

Ironclover responds:

I really appreciate the review, I've been working with classical music for more then a year so I'm just trying to add some variety to the genre, and the Oboe is actually a clarinet, as for the sound effects. I did think about adding some but then it might tear the person away from the actual song. I'm really glad I got the mood and I'm not done with the theme because I have to shove it in a fighting theme and a Boss theme and maybe another encounter theme so I will try your suggestions, thank you so much :D

Love the beat

The kick is amazing. I want it :( haha. Nice job. Btw, that kick would sound really good for a house track.

SynchroSpectre responds:

Haha, thanks but I don't think you can send .WAV files on newgrounds :P

Or can I...

so...

That bass is really good. (you even did the 4th bar transition from the tutorials haha). No, but really, that bass is good, and sounds different from the one in the tutorial.

To make it sound a lot better (and seriously try it it will have some effect), change the kick to something that has a more clicky sound but also a powerful low end. The one you use rightn now has too much low end and is too loud, and thus takes from the bass.

I LOVE the synth/melody that comes in around 1:43.

I think the lead synth could use a unison on it to make it sound a bit richer. The plucked version sounds great, but once the fliter freq is moved up, it sounds a little dry.

Also, the transition at : :51 is really good. I like the synth you used. I would add a little bit of ping pong reverb and just increase the wet to dry ratio during the transition to create a pulsing feel.

Anyways. Great job overall.

I really like the breakdown. It's really nice. So I'll be nice in my scoring haha.

TeHLoY responds:

I tend to modify presets to my taste, I never use the exact same sound from a tutorial or soundbank. That transition, I just felt that it sounded nice, so I put it in. I knew it was something I heard somewhere, but couldn't remember where. :X

I still have trouble finding/making good sounding kicks, just bear with me... But I'll get it sorted out eventually. :)

I just love reviews from you, they're extremely constructive, and do help me to improve. Thanks a lot for leaving behind these reviews!

I think you have interesting ideas

that would fit well in dubstep quite nicely actually. I wouldn't use the FPC samples though. It seems to me that some club samples would fit better for the synths that you are using, such as electronic kick drums, filtered/overdrived high hats, etc. I would also play around with some synths such as Sytrus for pads and interesting leads, as well as 3xosc for basslines. If you are interested in sound design, pm me, and I can hook you up with tutorials etc.

Haha,

you should be glad that I happened to stumble upon this, voting 5 just hours ago haha. You should definitely make this into a full song. It's a dubstep song that I would actually listen to. It's mellow, but has a lot of energy at the same time. The vocal samples are just great at the same time. They really fit the melody quite well. You just might have inspired me to create some mellow dubstep. Thanks!

Haha, this is so nice.

The quality of your work is pretty good I'd say. I really like it a lot. You definitely manage to capture the suspense of the moment. I think some crashes, and buildups would add some more as well.

Keep it up.

Ironclover responds:

Thanks! I'm glad you like it!!! I'm pretty proud of this one too. Too bad its the only one on NewGrounds, I love this Bowser Theme!!

ooh, I caught you just in time.

Your intro was sublime. It was incredibly smooth and had quite a nice touch of house stabs. (did you create those sounds yourself?). The Breakdown was very organic and reminiscent of film music. The whole song is quite nice. I just loved the smoothness of the entirety. For me, it was also nice because it was a departure from commercial trance. Well made, well played.

Mrmilkcarton responds:

Ya, most of the synths in this song I made from scratch. The stab was some reverse delay on a pluck I made in Sylenth1.

The piano is amazing.

Some eq and delay (ping pong delay of 3/4 time), and then some long reverb (3-4 second tail time) with medium damping on that piano would do it some good for the trance genre. Have you tried ambient? I have a feeling that you'd be very good at that genre. The instruments don't feel too trance-like to me, but have certain qualities that would make them sound really good with some reverb, delay. Good work I'd say.

Nice sounds

I think the processing could use some work (such as mastering). The sound that comes in at :14 should be a little quieter in my opinion. The bass is really nicely done though. I would use a different kick though because it doesn't create the kind of pumping sound that I'm expecting. The melodies are terrific.

At :42, my jaw dropped at the power of the chord progression and the pads that just flow in. At 1:20, same thing. The sounds really help the melody become something quite special. Really, your melodies never cease to amaze me. Keep working at it.

TeHLoY responds:

Well... I do lack samples, so getting a kick sound is pretty hard. And mastering is one field of music that I have almost never touched.
Thanks for taking time to review my stuff, I know you're busy anyway. :)
